Shopping for Energy-efficient Appliances

A couple of weeks ago, after I wrote about keeping my dishwasher nice and clean on the inside, I thought about how much longer my old machine will last and when I’ll need to replace it. In fact, all of my major appliances came with the house: I don’t know how old they are or how much longer they will last. At some point, I’m going to have to slowly replace most of them.

But how do I know if I’m getting the most energy-efficient appliance on the market for the amount of money I’ve budgeted for?

This week, I discovered the Avista Marketplace. It incorporates my love of window shopping on the internet with energy-efficient appliances.

On the side of the page, I can select the size, brand and other features that I want in an appliance. I can look at different models by price and sign up for alerts for when specific models go on sale.

I can see how much water a dishwasher uses a cycle and figure out how much it will cost me in power over the years. If I’m torn between a couple of different ones, I can compare them side-by-side and see which one is best for me.

I can also set up alerts to see if a new model is added to the list and I can look at a map to see where I can find them in Spokane.

The site includes many different kinds of appliances, not just washers, dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators. You can also look up televisions, office equipment, tablets, air conditioners and thermostats.

I love window shopping online. When I’m finally ready, I’ll know where to go when I’m ready to buy.

Lisa, an Avista customer, bought her 1910 house because she loved the old-world character, some of which doesn’t make her house very energy efficient. Lisa is sharing her experience on taking some simple do-it-yourself improvements to inspire others to do the same.
