Klamath Falls, OR – Back-to-school shopping is a cherished tradition for many families — a time to pick out new jeans, shoes, backpacks, and maybe even a coveted tablet. These purchases mark the transition to a new school year and celebrate a child’s growth and progress.
But for some families, this seasonal ritual is out of reach. National data shows that the average family with a K–12 student spends over $800 on back-to-school shopping, including electronics. Yet nearly one in four students lack access to even the most basic supplies and the number of families facing financial hardship continues to grow.
That’s where the Assistance League of Klamath Basin steps in.
The League’s flagship program, Operation School Bell, provides essential school clothing and supplies to students in need. Starting in late September, eligible elementary, middle, and high school students receive a $135 shopping certificate to use at a local Fred Meyer store. The store partners with the League to stretch each dollar further by offering discounts to families.
Forty-one schools currently participate in the program, and additional certificates are available to support students preparing for graduation.
Local support plays a vital role in sustaining these programs. Operation School Bell recently received a grant from the Avista Foundation, helping expand its reach and impact.
Founded in 1986, the Assistance League of Klamath Basin is a volunteer-run nonprofit with no paid staff. Members are responsible for raising the organization’s $150,000 annual budget, which supports several youth-focused initiatives. While Operation School Bell is the League’s primary program, it also operates Children in Foster Care (CFC) and Project USA.
The CFC program provides $140 certificates to children in foster families, distributed through the Department of Social and Health Services. Project USA, a program unique to the Klamath Basin chapter, funds the painting of large, colorful USA maps on local playgrounds — blending art, geography, and community pride.
The Klamath Basin chapter is one of over 100 nationwide under the umbrella of the National Assistance League, which boasts more than 22,000 members across the country.
To ensure year-round fundraising, the chapter also operates Findables, a gently used furniture store offering a wide selection of home décor, antiques, and collectibles. Proceeds from Findables directly support the League’s mission to serve youth and families in the Klamath Basin.
