At Home with Lisa: Clean your microwave

I was looking through Avista’s Energy Guide and it said that keeping the inside of your microwave clean will help it run more efficiently.

Well, I’m embarrassed to say that my microwave was getting pretty crusty this week. We use it a lot during the summer months to cook without heating up the house. Honestly, I’m short, and it is up high, so I don’t see too much of the inside. Out of sight, out of mind.

An easy way to clean your microwave is to get two paper towels wet—really soak them and don’t wring them out too much. Place them in your microwave and heat them on high for two minutes. When they are cool enough to handle, use the paper towels to wipe the inside of your microwave clean.

Now that I know this, I’m going to buy a cover to place over our plated meals and bowls of soup so they don’t splatter all over the inside of my microwave.

Lisa, an Avista customer, bought her 1910 house because she loved the old-world character, some of which doesn’t make her house very energy efficient. Lisa is sharing her experience on taking some simple do-it-yourself improvements to inspire others to do the same. You’ll find her stories right here every Tuesday.
