At Home with Lisa: Ease the heat

You wouldn’t think it would make much of a difference with temperatures reaching 111 degrees, but all through our recent heatwave I kept seeing posts on social media about putting aluminum foil on your windows to keep the temperature down.

We decided to give it a try. We had pulled out our fans to spread the air-conditioned air around the house, but it wasn’t quite cooling things down. During those hot days, our house started heating up bright and early every morning, with the sun blasting into the kitchen.

We took a spray bottle and filled it with soapy water. We sprayed the windows and the aluminum foil stuck right to it. Then, we took a step back and waited.

The day was just as hot as the couple before, but the kitchen wasn’t nearly as hot as the first couple of days. With this room considerably cooler, it was easier to cool down the other rooms.

Yes, it’s a temporary fix, but hopefully this last heat wave was as bad as it’s going to be this year. And sometimes you do find good advice on social media.

Lisa, an Avista customer, bought her 1910 house because she loved the old-world character, some of which doesn’t make her house very energy efficient. Lisa is sharing her experience on taking some simple do-it-yourself improvements to inspire others to do the same. You’ll find her stories right here every Tuesday morning.
