At Home with Lisa: Emergency Preparedness

Last year, I created my own emergency readiness kit to mark Emergency Preparedness Month, which happens every September. I collected the following items to make sure I had what I needed in case of an extended power outage:

This year, I thought it would be a good idea to check on the items I should replace. I swapped out the batteries, got a new case of bottled water and exchanged the canned food for newer items. I also researched other items I could add to my kit, just in case.

Avista’s website has lot of information about what to do if you lose power. You should also watch this video for more tips about a power outage.

I also downloaded the Avista app, which I found in Apple’s app store, and is also available for Android. You can find maps to see where the outages are and how long they are expected. You can report any power outage using the app, too.

In my experience, long-term outages are pretty rare, but they do happen. It’s good to have an emergency kit just in case.

Lisa, an Avista customer, bought her 1910 house because she loved the old-world character, some of which doesn’t make her house very energy efficient. Lisa is sharing her experience on taking some simple do-it-yourself improvements to inspire others to do the same. You’ll find her stories right here every Tuesday.
