Avista's Energy is Clean and Getting Cleaner

Dan Johnson is Avista’s Director of Clean Energy Strategy. As he settles into this new role, he offers his thoughts about Avista’s longstanding commitment to providing clean, reliable and affordable energy for our customers and our vision of a clean energy future that encompasses both electric and natural gas resources.

Lately, there has been a lot of news around renewable clean energy. Did you know that 60% of the electricity Avista generates comes from renewable sources? Our foundation of energy delivery has been our renewable hydro system since our company was formed in 1889 — 133 years ago!

We have had a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability and keeping energy affordable for our customers. Avista’s Clean Energy Plan builds on our history to deliver clean, safe, and reliable energy choices to our customers.

You may have heard about new legislation in Washington with the Clean Energy Transformation Act. This law sets more milestones to continue the clean energy journey and reduce carbon emissions. We have been doing this for quite some time with decades of innovation and adding clean energy sources like biomass, wind and solar.

We also set our own clean energy goals to serve our customers with 100% clean electricity by 2045 and to have a carbon-neutral supply of electricity by the end of 2027. On the natural gas side, our goal is to be carbon neutral by 2045, with a near-term goal of 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Avista continues to reduce the emissions of the energy we deliver, whether it is electricity or natural gas. We have a plan to exit out of what remains of our coal-produced power, we are purchasing renewable natural gas for customers of our gas system and we are researching hydrogen as another renewable fuel. We believe we need to have a diversified energy grid to reliably serve our customers and give them the energy choices that matter to them.

We know that our own clean energy goals and those set forth in CETA are ambitious, but we’re committed to finding a path to get there in a way that balances reliability and affordability.

Stay tuned for more news on how we are getter cleaner in providing energy for you.
