At Home with Lisa: Use a fan and your AC to stay cool

Finally, the weather is starting to warm up. Our long, chilly wet spring has turned into a hot summer.

It seems like our summers are so short compared to the other seasons, so I like to enjoy the warmth while I can. But that doesn’t mean that I like to have my home warm during these months.

Yes, fans use a lot less energy than air conditioners. In fact, I looked through Avista Energy Guide and found that a portable fan uses about 7.3 kilowatt hours a month, or $0.73 a month. A room air conditioner can use about 225 kilowatt hours a month, or $22.50, if you run it for five hours a day. That’s a huge difference.

But if you turn on an electric fan when you turn on your air conditioner, the fan can blow the cool air around the room to keep you more comfortable.

Lisa, an Avista customer, bought her 1910 house because she loved the old-world character, some of which doesn’t make her house very energy efficient. Lisa is sharing her experience on taking some simple do-it-yourself improvements to inspire others to do the same. You’ll find her stories right here every Tuesday morning.
