Waterways near dams may look calm, but they can hide serious and sudden dangers for boaters, swimmers, and anglers. 

At Avista, we want you to safely enjoy recreation on area reservoirs and rivers. However, water conditions near dams can change quickly and without warning. Sudden releases from spillways or turbines can create powerful currents, rapidly rising water levels, and dangerous turbulence. 

Cold water is another hidden hazard. Even on warm days, water released from reservoirs is often extremely cold. Sudden immersion in cold water can cause cold‑water shock and hypothermia, quickly reducing your ability to swim, think clearly, or self‑rescue.
