Play it safe above and below a dam 

Waterways near dams may look calm, but they can hide serious and sudden dangers for boaters, swimmers, and anglers. 

At Avista, we want you to safely enjoy recreation on area reservoirs and rivers. However, water conditions near dams can change quickly and without warning. Sudden releases from spillways or turbines can create powerful currents, rapidly rising water levels, and dangerous turbulence. 

Cold water is another hidden hazard. Even on warm days, water released from reservoirs is often extremely cold. Sudden immersion in cold water can cause cold‑water shock and hypothermia, quickly reducing your ability to swim, think clearly, or self‑rescue. 

To stay safe near a dam, always follow these important safety tips: 

• Obey all posted warning signs, barriers, and closures. 
• Always wear a properly fitted life jacket and carry a safety whistle when on the water. 
• Be aware that water temperatures may be hypothermic year‑round. Cold water can overwhelm even strong swimmers in minutes. 
• Stay alert for debris, obstructions, and partially submerged objects. 
• Never fish, swim, play, or anchor a boat in areas above or below a dam. 
• Never cross a boater safety cable above a dam. Strong currents can pull boats and people toward open spill gates or intake areas.
