Metro Substation
Avista is committed to making sure your power is safe and reliable, which includes upgrading and replacing equipment when needed. The existing Metro 115kV Substation serves the urban core of downtown Spokane and has done so reliably for almost 50 years. The Metro Substation typically powers half of downtown Spokane, including both commercial and residential customers and the Historic Davenport Hotel, Washington Trust, Century Link, and Wells Fargo buildings among many others. The existing Metro substation is approaching its end of life with outdated equipment and a footprint that does not meet future needs for expansion.
The new Metro substation is located on Third Ave between Post St and Wall St. Construction of the exterior wall enclosure and associated sidewalks and landscaping began July 2023 and will continue through August 2024. The aesthetic of the architectural wall enclosure and landscaping will help revitalize the area. Construction work inside the wall enclosure will continue through 2027.
In-street work associated with this project will begin in August 2023 through October 2024 in multiple streets including Third Ave, Wall St, Post St, and Lincoln St to complete the underground electrical infrastructure for this new substation. This will be done in smaller block sections as much as possible to mitigate traffic and closure impacts. Access to local businesses and parking is available. Watch for directional signage for customers in the area. View Metro Substation traffic control plan.
