New State of Idaho Usage Tax
Beginning January 2026, Idaho customers will notice a new line on their bill labeled “State of Idaho Usage Tax”. This change is the result of Idaho House Bill 329, passed by the state legislation in 2025. The new law requires all centrally assessed utilities in Idaho to collect taxes directly from Idaho customers based on their energy usage, rather than continuing to include them in base energy rates.
The tax is based on the amount of energy used each billing period:
- Electric customers: $.000923 per kWh sold
- Natural gas customers: $.010802 per therm sold
The goal of these changes is to streamline taxation for energy companies while ensuring fair distribution of tax revenue to local governments.
